Stop in the Hohe Tauern National Park and experience nature in a new way. Observe animals in their natural environment and explore the big and small wonders of the animal and plant world. Our little visitors in particular can look forward to a special journey of discovery. Real marmots and ibexes can be observed in the wild.
Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe
The highlight of a trip on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is undoubtedly the viewpoint that the Habsburg Emperor once visited himself. Today, the multi-storey car park, visitor centre, observation tower and restaurant are enthroned at the top – and unique views of the snow-covered Grossglockner, the 9 km long Pasterze glacier tongue and the Johannisberg open up from everywhere.

Gabriel of Salamanca began building the castle in 1533, and the Renaissance building was completed in 1597 according to plans by Italian master builders. The three-storey arcades and the rich stucco and relief decoration of the castle earned it the title of "most beautiful Renaissance building north of the Alps" from art historians.
In 1662 the princes of Porcia acquired the county and administered it until 1918. In the 18th century numerous Baroque details were added, such as the Porcia family coat of arms in the courtyard.
The castle has been owned by the municipality of Spittal since 1951, which made the building accessible to the public and established it as the cultural center of the city.
Since 1958, the two top floors have housed the Museum of Folk Culture, since 1959 the "Comedy Games" have been held in the castle courtyard every year, since 1964 the "International Choir Competition" - cultural events that have made Spittal famous far beyond the borders of Carinthia.

Fish lovers should not miss out on enjoying the Reinanke. It is related to the brown trout and is native to many Carinthian lakes. Only a few professional fishermen are allowed to catch the 30 to 50 centimeter long fish.

In the garnet city of Radenthein, just a few steps from the town center, you will find meter-long deposits of garnet in the rock. For years, garnet was mined here and brought to Bohemian grinding shops for processing, which it left seductively sparkling as Bohemian garnet. The market town with a long mining and thermal bath tradition has developed into a popular health resort in recent years with the constant expansion of the spa center. Also recognized are special therapies in two healing climate tunnels, which bring relief from chronic respiratory diseases, allergies and stress.
Part of the former tunnel is now used as a show mine. On the one hand there is the mystical world of wonders “Terra Mystica” with multimedia shows and on the other hand there is “Terra Montana”, which shows the working world of the former miners. In the "Terra Mystica" there is the longest miner's slide in Europe with a length of 68 meters.

The Metnitztal is known for the fact that customs are still actively lived. The Metnitz Dance of Death is known far beyond the borders. This folk drama with choir accompaniment is only performed by amateur actors every three years. It deals with the equality of all human beings before death. This particular custom includes a cycle of frescoes, a ossuary with a copy of the fresco, and a ship of the dead.
"Come to my dance, all of you who have already given your life in God's hands to a happy end!"

In the Middle Ages, Hochosterwitz Castle served as protection for the population. The ingenious architecture made the castle impregnable. Opponents had to conquer goal after goal, which made them vulnerable. The residents were self-sufficient. There was a carpenter's workshop, a carpenter's shop, a mill, a blacksmith's shop, a bakery, book printing, as well as wine, vegetable and fruit growing. Medieval craftsmanship is still cultivated in the castle today.
