Day

Niederaula, Deutschland

It's the same as always: we're going to be late because of a family appointment.

Departure around 2:30 p.m.

We take the A7 motorway to FD Süd and then the A 66 towards Hanau.

Continue on the B45 to Hummetroth. There we reach our first destination: a historical excavation - the Roman Villa Haselburg.

Römische Villa Haselburg, Hummetroth, Hessen, Germany

Roman Villa Haselburg - Historical fort

Always fascinating what the Romans already had for a bathing culture.

The place is beautifully situated and offers not only archeology but also a great view over the Odenwald.

Unfortunately we are too late to visit the information center. That closes at 5pm.

We stay for about 30 min.

Our next destination is not far - Michelstadt

Stellplatz Michelstadt

We arrive at the pitch in the evening. Free, V+E free, electricity and water for a fee.

It's big, uncomfortable and loud. There is one public toilet which is quite clean.

The nearby supermarket is also a plus.

The way to the city is not far and easy to reach on foot.

We make our way towards the brewery because we are hungry now. The city's most famous building - the historic town hall - is on our way.

The town hall was built in 1484. American visitors can hardly imagine that the building was built before the discovery of America.

Right next door is an imposing baroque building, the former inn "Zum goldenen Löwen". With all the half-timbered buildings, it is completely out of the ordinary due to its architectural style. A richly decorated gate with a golden balcony above adorns the entrance. At times it was used as a post office by Thurn and Taxis. Today the tourist information is housed there.

We pass the town church and the elephant house. The brewery is well stocked, although we're not in the high season and it's Wednesday.

The menu also includes regional dishes, such as boiled cheese schnitzel.

Well fed we take a walk through the manageable city center. Then we stop for a drink in "Franzis Weinerei".

Here we have to learn that the world is a village after all!

Four men are sitting at the next table. After a while I am approached. Am I from Bad Hersfeld? And once worked at G......? I have to say yes to both. The man comes out: Then I was her trainee. I'm floored, I didn't expect that. And I didn't recognize the middle-aged man either. Has changed a lot though. It's going to be another fun evening.

We want to continue. Our next destination is Deidesheim in the Palatinate.

Day

Freitag, 21.04.2023, Deidesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany

It won't be a quiet night. A couple of nightingales live in the garden and the rooster sings all night long at an unimaginable volume. Sleep is unthinkable without a plug.

When we wake up, our eyes immediately fall on the adjacent vineyard. So idyllic after all.

After breakfast we meet the host and learn that a wine tasting is planned in the house for the afternoon. Spontaneously we decide that after our planned visit to Speyer we don't want to spend the night there but return to our pitch and take part in the wine tasting.

Day

Samstag, 22.04.2023, Auerbach, Schloß Auerbach

Departure is planned for today. We want to approach the next destination along the wine route. It goes north to Bad Dürkheim. There is a large flea market here, which we spontaneously visit.

We continue and we take a short break in a vineyard for coffee and sandwiches.

Continue via Worms to Bensheim to the next destination, Auerbach Castle.

It's a steep climb. Luck is on our side and we get a parking space very close to the ruin.

The ruins are in a fantastic location. The view great. You can look over the entire Rhine plain to the Palatinate Forest. After the tour of the old walls, we stop briefly in the Burgschänke. The apple spritzer is at least as good as the view.

It goes downhill to Hochstätten. There is a parking space directly at the "Dorfcafé" restaurant. We have dinner there.

Day

Hering, Hessen, Germany

Our last day didn't start well, let's see what we can do with it.

We drive in the direction of Hanau and pass near a fortress that I noticed on the way to Hummetroth. It is the Veste Otzburg in Hering.

Since we have time, we will make a stop there.

There is a parking space in Hering that we really like.

We take a walk around the mountain of the Otzburg. Then, when we enter the fortress, we turn to the north side. In the distance you can see the skyline of Frankfurt.

We like the beer garden. There's bratwurst, I can't resist.

It's nice to sit here under the trees.

Something that bothers me is the aircraft noise from the planes taking off from Frankfurt. Whether you can also hear it at the pitch in the WoMo? There is a ban on night flights.

We're on our way home. On the way we pick up some fresh asparagus from a street stand. He will extend our short vacation at home a bit.
