The heritage of the Old World begins in early human history. It seems that 30,000 years ago, in the Stone Age, a high civilization already existed. Giant stone formations and artistic rock and cave paintings testify to this. In ancient times, Celts, Greeks, Romans and later the Byzantines left their mark on the culture, before the cathedrals of the Middle Ages symbolized the power of Christianity. After the Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism, a differentiated post-industrial cultural landscape developed in modern times. In spite of industrialization and intensive agriculture, Germany also has a lot to offer in terms of landscape, which is the habitat of countless wild plants and animals.
Germany acceded to the UNESCO Convention for the Preservation of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2013. This step is an appreciation and recognition of traditional knowledge and skills. Under the motto "Knowing, learning and passing on. On the other hand, Germany implements the Convention through various activities. The aim of UNESCO is to preserve, ensure and promote the diversity of the living cultural heritage in Germany and worldwide .

The medieval towns of Wismar and Stralsund are located on the Baltic coast of northern Germany. They were the most important trading centers of the Hanseatic League in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Swedish became administrative and defensive centers for the German territories. The cities have contributed to the development of the characteristic building forms and techniques of Brick Gothic in the Baltic region. The historic centers show the development of this Gothic style over several centuries. This can be seen in a number of important brick cathedrals, Stralsund Town Hall and in the series of houses for residential, commercial and craft use.

Lübeck is the former capital and queen city of the Hanseatic League – a partnership of merchants and cities during the Middle Ages. The city was founded in 1143 by Heinrich der Löwe on a small island off the Baltic coast. The city flourished until the 16th century as the most important trading center for Northern Europe. It is still a center for maritime trade, especially with the Scandinavian countries. Despite the damage the city suffered during World War II, the basic structure of the old city has remained unchanged. The old part consists mainly of 15th and 16th century patrician houses, public monuments (the famous Holstentor brick gate), churches and salt warehouses.

The town hall and the statue of Roland (the Paladin of Charlemagne) – dating from 1404 and 5.5 meters high – in the market square of Bremen, in northwestern Germany, show the bourgeois autonomy and sovereignty as it developed in the Holy Roman Empire in Europe. The Old Town Hall was built in the Gothic style in the early 15th century, after Bremen became a Hanseatic city. The building was renovated in the early 17th century in the so-called Weser Renaissance style. At the beginning of the 20th century, a new town hall was built next to the old one.

St Michael's Church was built between 1010 and 1020 according to a symmetrical design with two apses, typical of Ottonian Romanesque art in ancient Saxony. The interior - especially the wooden ceiling and painted stucco, the famous bronze doors and the Bernward bronze column - the first castings of this size since antiquity are of exceptional importance. This also applies to the treasures of the cathedral of Saint Mary, including the bronze chandelier from 1060 with a diameter of six meters. Both the church and the cathedral are examples of the Romanesque churches of the Holy Roman Empire.

The Zollverein industrial complex in North Rhine-Westphalia consists of the complete infrastructure of a historic coal mining area. These include a number of 20th-century buildings of outstanding architectural value. The buildings are examples of the design concepts of the Modern Movement, applied to architecture in a totally industrial context. The industrial complex was one of the most modern coal mines in the world at the time it was in active use, from the mid-19th century until the mine closed in 1986. Zollverein is tangible evidence of the rise and fall of heavy industry over the past 150 years.

Construction of this Palatinate Chapel, with its octagonal basilica and dome, began under Emperor Charlemagne around 790 to 800 AD. The cathedral was originally inspired by the churches of the eastern part of the Holy Roman Empire and was beautifully extended during the Middle Ages. The construction of this emperor's chapel in Aachen symbolized the unification of the west and the spiritual and political revival under the patronage of Charlemagne. In 814 Charlemagne was buried here. The collection of the cathedral's treasury is of inestimable archaeological, aesthetic and historical interest.

Construction on this Gothic masterpiece began in 1248 and was carried out in several stages until it was completed in 1880. Over seven centuries, successive builders were inspired by the same faith and a spirit of absolute fidelity to the original plans. The western facade is the largest church facade in the world with an area of 7,000 square meters, flanked by 2 towers of 156 meters each. Apart from its exceptional intrinsic value and the artistic masterpieces it contains, Cologne Cathedral bears witness to the enduring power of European Christianity.

Augustusburg Castle is the opulent residence of the Prince-Archbishops of Cologne. Famous artists from Europe collaborated on the construction, including Balthasar Neumann who designed a magnificent stairwell. Architecture, sculpture, painting and park design make this castle a pinnacle of German Rococo. Falkenlust hunting lodge is a country house full of symmetry. On the ground floor is an oval salon full of improvisation, charm and freedom. The walls are covered with shells and stones. Nestled in an idyllic garden landscape, the castles of Augustusburg and Falkenlust are the earliest examples of Rococo architecture in 18th century Germany.

The Middle Rhine Valley extends over 65 kilometers. With its castles, historic towns and vineyards, the valley illustrates the long history of human involvement in an impressive and varied natural landscape. The landscape has been shaped in part by more than 2,000 years of terrace formation on the steep slopes. The valley is one of the most important transport routes in Europe, connecting the north with the Mediterranean countries. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is closely associated with history and legend, and has been a major influence on writers, artists and composers for centuries. The valley also shows the ongoing traditional way of life and communication in a narrow river valley.

Trier is located on the Moselle. It was a Roman colony from the first century AD and then a major trading center in the century after. In the late third century it became one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy and came to be known as the 'second Rome'. The number and quality of the surviving monuments bear witness to Roman civilization in a special way, such as the bridge, the remains of the fortified wall, the amphitheater and warehouses. Most famous is the surviving Roman gate, also called Porta Nigra (black gate). St. Peter's Cathedral is the oldest church in Germany. Commissioned by the Roman Emperor Constantine, construction began in 326 AD. The Church of Our Lady was one of the first Gothic churches in Germany and dates back to 1260.

The iron smelter covers some six hectares and dominates the town of Völklingen. Although production did not stop until 1986, this is the only surviving example – in all of Western Europe and North America – of an integrated ironworks built and equipped in the 19th and 20th centuries. The first blast furnace was built in 1882-1883, a coking plant was built in 1897 and in 1900 installations to blow the hot air stream into the blast furnace. At the end of the 19th century, Völklingen was one of the most productive factories in Europe and Germany's largest manufacturer of steel beams. The smelter was a model for the whole world.

Conrad II laid the foundations of Speyer Cathedral in 1030, a four-towered, two-domed basilica that was rebuilt at the end of the 11th century. It is one of the most important Romanesque monuments from the time of the Holy Roman Empire. The cathedral was the burial place of the German emperors for almost 300 years. Speyer Cathedral is the first known structure to have a gallery surrounding the entire building. The design of the basilica greatly influenced the further development of Romanesque architecture during the 11th and 12th centuries.

Founded in 1147, the Maulbronn Monastery is considered the most complete and best-preserved monastic complex north of the Alps. It is surrounded by fortified walls and the main buildings of the complex were built between the 12th and 16th centuries. The monastery church had a major influence on the spread of Gothic architecture over much of Northern and Central Europe. The church is a typical example of first-generation Cistercian architecture. The Maulbronn water management system - with its extensive network of drainage channels, irrigation channels and reservoirs - is of exceptional importance.

The island of Reichenau in Lake Constance preserves the traces of the Benedictine monastery, which was founded in 724 and exerted a remarkable spiritual, intellectual and artistic influence. The churches of Mary and Mark, Peter and Paul, and Gregory, built mainly between the 9th and 11th centuries, provide a panorama of early medieval monastic architecture in Central Europe. Their murals bear witness to an impressive artistic activity. The Reichenau Monastery was an artistic center of great significance for the history of art in Europe in the 10th and 11th centuries, as can be seen from its murals and ornaments.

The Wies Church was built from 1745 to 1754 and has been well preserved in the beautiful setting of an Alpine valley. The church was built by the architect Dominikus Zimmermann and is considered a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo art; exuberant, colorful and cheerful. In 1738 a miracle happened: a simple wooden statue of Christ was no longer venerated by the Premonstratensians and a number of believers saw the statue in tears. A wooden chapel was built to honor the miraculous statue. Due to the large increase in pilgrims, the abbot decided in 1745 to build a magnificent sanctuary.

Regensburg is located on the Danube in Bavaria. The medieval city has many buildings that testify to its history as a trading center and to its influence in the region from the 9th century. A large number of historic structures span some two millennia, including ancient Roman, Romanesque and Gothic buildings. Regensburg's 11th- to 13th-century architecture – including the market, town hall and cathedral – still defines the city's character, characterized by tall buildings, dark and narrow alleys and strong fortifications. One of the landmark structures is the Old Bridge, built in the 12th century.
The Limes is the border of the former Roman Empire. This fortified frontier line was to hold back enemy incursions and secure control of the Rhine. The Limes runs in Germany from Bad Hönningen along the Rhine to Regensburg on the Danube. Archaeological sites, museums, Roman buildings and their reconstructions can be seen in more than 70 places in Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. Good examples are the Saalburg in Bad Homburg and Castell Weißenburg.

This magnificent Baroque palace – one of the largest and most beautiful in Germany and surrounded by beautiful gardens – was built under the patronage of Prince-Bishops Lothar Franz and Friedrich Carl von Schönborn. It was built and decorated in the 18th century by an international team of architects, painters (including Tiepolo), sculptors and plasterers, led by Balthasar Neumann. Most worth seeing is the court church, the interior of which is richly decorated with paintings, statues and ornaments. The stairwell is famous for the largest fresco in the world – painted by Tiepolo – and the Imperial Hall is the focal point of the palace.

The abbey and the archaeological remains of the nearby Altenmünster monastery in Lorsch show the awakening of the spirit of the early and high Middle Ages in the west. The abbey, together with its monumental entrance – the famous 'Torhall' – forms one of the rare architectural remains of the Carolingian era. The sculptures and paintings from this period are still in remarkably good condition. The abbey was founded around 760-764 and later became the burial place of the kings of the East Carolingian Empire. The remains of the monastery are among the most important remains of pre-Romanesque architecture in Germany.

The Messel quarry – a former mine near Darmstadt – is the richest place in the world for studying the environment in the Eocene, the geological epoch between 57 million and 36 million years ago. In particular, the quarry provides unique information about the early stages of mammalian evolution and contains exceptionally well-preserved mammalian fossils. It ranges from fully articulated skeletons to the contents of stomachs of animals from this period. In addition to the fossils of mammals, there are also fossils of birds, reptiles, fish, insects and plants.

Bamberg became an important link with the Slavic peoples from the 10th century, especially with those from Poland and Pomerania. During the period of greatest prosperity – from the 12th century onwards – the architecture of the city strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century, Bamberg was the center of the Enlightenment in southern Germany; The prominent philosopher Hegel and author Hoffmann lived there. It never became an industrial city as trade, especially in hops, remained its economic base. Bamberg is an example of a Central European city with a medieval urban design and many buildings from that time.

The small Thuringian town of Weimar became the capital of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in 1572. Over a longer period of time, the city's cultural importance increased with a flourishing period in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Many painters, writers, poets, musicians and philosophers lived in the city. This development is reflected in the high quality of many buildings and parks in the area. Among its famous inhabitants were Lucas Cranach the Elder, Johann Sebastian Bach, Christoph Martin Wieland, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Johann Gottfried Herder, Friedrich Schiller, Franz Liszt, Henry van de Velde and Walter Gropius.

Wartburg Castle blends beautifully with its wooded surroundings and is in many ways 'the ideal castle'. Although it retains some original features from the feudal period, the shape it took during its reconstruction in the 19th century gives a good idea of what this fortress must have been like at the height of its military power and that of its landlord. The castle also counts as a powerful symbol of German integration and unity. Martin Luther was in exile in the Wartburg, at which time he was translating the New Testament into German.

This 559.9 hectare landscape park is located on the Neisse River and the border between Poland and Germany. It was built from 1815 to 1844 by Prince Hermann von Pückler-Muskau. The park fitted in seamlessly with the surrounding cultural landscape. This new way of landscaping was groundbreaking and was followed in Europe and America. With this 'painting with plants' they did not try to evoke a classical, paradisiacal or a lost perfect landscape. Instead, local plants were used to improve the quality of the existing landscape. The park extends to the city of Muskau, which became part of a utopian landscape.

The places Eisleben and Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt are linked to the life of Martin Luther and his fellow reformer Melanchthon. In Eisleben are the houses where Luther was born in 1483 and died in 1546. In Wittenberg is the Luther House - where he lived and worked for 40 years - and Melanchthon's barely changed house. You will also find the town church and the castle chapel where Luther slammed his famous 95 Theses on the door on October 31, 1517. This initiated the Reformation and marked the beginning of a new era in the religious and political history of the Western world.

The Garden Kingdom Dessau-Wörlitz is located in the meadow landscape of the Elbe and the Mulde, the floodplains of which extend to the parks. It is an exceptional example of landscape design and planning from the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century. As the philosophical principles of the Enlightenment were applied to the design, the garden landscape integrates art, education and economics into a harmonious whole. The Garden Kingdom consists of various components: special buildings, landscaped parks, English-style gardens and subtly modified extensive agricultural lands. The core is formed by the historic gardens, with their buildings and sculpture.

Located first in Weimar and later in Dessau, the Bauhaus School revolutionized architectural and aesthetic concepts and practices between 1919 and 1933. The buildings constructed and decorated by the school's professors – Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Wassily Kandinsky – were the start of the Modern Movement, which shaped much of the architecture of the 20th century. The building of the Bauhaus School in Weimar is representative of the progressive architectural concepts of Jugendstil in the transition phase between historicism and modernism. The building was decorated in 1923 with murals by Herbert Beyer. In 1925 the school had to close for political reasons. The Bauhaus found a new home in Dessau and experienced a short but very influential period. The Bauhaus was finally closed in 1933. In 2017, the world heritage site was expanded with buildings that were created under the direction of Hannes Meyer, Gropius' successor until 1930. These include various gallery flats in Dessau and the ADGB Handelsschool in Bernau. The extension shows the Bauhaus contribution to austere design, functionalism and social reform. Bauhaus revolutionized the thinking and practice of architecture in the 20th century.

Quedlinburg in the 'Land' of Saxony-Anhalt, was a capital of the East Frankish German Empire at the time of the Saxon-Otton dynasty. The old town became too small in the 12th century and a new town was built. In 1330 they were joined together, surrounded by a common wall. Quedlinburg has been a prosperous trading town since the Middle Ages. The quantity (about 1,300 from 6 centuries) and high quality of the half-timbered houses make it an exceptional example of a medieval European city. The Stiftskerk of Saint Servatius is one of the masterpieces of Romanesque architecture.

The Upper Harz mining water management system is located south of the Rammelsberg mines and the town of Goslar. It was developed over a period of about 800 years to aid in the process of mining ore for the production of non-ferrous metals. Construction began in the Middle Ages and the system was widely developed from the late 16th century to the 19th century. It consists of an extremely complex, but perfectly cohesive system of artificial ponds, small canals, tunnels and underground sewers. The system enabled the development of hydropower for use in mining and metalworking processes.

Modernist residential areas
This area consists of six residential areas that bear witness to innovative housing policies from 1910 to 1933 – particularly during the Weimar Republic – when the city of Berlin was particularly progressive socially, politically and culturally. The residential areas are a prime example of the construction reform movement that has helped to improve the housing and living conditions of low-income people through new approaches to urban planning, architecture and garden design. The neighborhoods show a new way of urbanization and architecture, elaborated in fresh designs and technical and aesthetic innovations. The projects have influenced housing construction worldwide.

Museum Island
The museum as a social phenomenon has its origins in the Age of Enlightenment in the 18th century. The five museums on Museum Island in Berlin were built between 1824 and 1930. They are the realization of a visionary project and show the development in approaches to museum design over more than a century. Each museum is designed to show an organic connection to its art collection. The importance of the museum's collections – which trace the development of civilizations through the ages – is enhanced by the urban and architectural quality of the buildings.
