Trier is located on the Moselle. It was a Roman colony from the first century AD and then a major trading center in the century after. In the late third century it became one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy and came to be known as the 'second Rome'. The number and quality of the surviving monuments bear witness to Roman civilization in a special way, such as the bridge, the remains of the fortified wall, the amphitheater and warehouses. Most famous is the surviving Roman gate, also called Porta Nigra (black gate). St. Peter's Cathedral is the oldest church in Germany. The iron smelter covers some six hectares and dominates the town of Völklingen. Although production did not stop until 1986, this is the only surviving example – in all of Western Europe and North America – of an integrated ironworks built and equipped in the 19th and 20th centuries. The first blast furnace was built in 1882-1883, a coking plant was built in 1897 and in 1900 installations to blow the hot air stream into the blast furnace. At the end of the 19th century, Völklingen was one of the most productive factories in Europe and Germany's largest manufacturer of steel beams. The smelter was a model for the whole world.

The church was built by the architect Dominikus Zimmermann and is considered a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo art; exuberant, colorful and cheerful. In 1738 a miracle happened: a simple wooden statue of Christ was no longer venerated by the Premonstratensians and a number of believers saw the statue in tears. Located first in Weimar and later in Dessau, the Bauhaus School revolutionized architectural and aesthetic concepts and practices between 1919 and 1933. The buildings constructed and decorated by the school's professors – Walter Gropius, Hannes Meyer, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Wassily Kandinsky – were the start of the Modern Movement, which shaped much of the architecture of the 20th century. The building of the Bauhaus School in Weimar is representative of the progressive architectural concepts of Jugendstil in the transition phase between historicism and modernism. The building was decorated in 1923 with murals by Herbert Beyer. In 1925 the school had to close for political reasons. The Bauhaus found a new home in Dessau and experienced a short but very influential period. The Bauhaus was finally closed in 1933. In 2017, the world heritage site was expanded with buildings that were created under the direction of Hannes Meyer, Gropius' successor until 1930. These include various gallery flats in Dessau and the ADGB Handelsschool in Bernau. The extension shows the Bauhaus contribution to austere design, functionalism and social reform. Bauhaus revolutionized the thinking and practice of architecture in the 20th century.
